Qualifications
Dr Sarah Thompson
I am a Senior Clinical Psychologist based in Dublin, providing online therapy. I studied for my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in Trinity College Dublin, where I also completed a Masters in Applied Psychology. After working in UCD, I completed my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in NUI Galway. Prior to setting up my own private practise, I worked for 12 years in HSE community and inpatient psychiatric settings, with people suffering from significant mental health difficulties. During this time I strove to upskill in the most effective evidence based therapies in order to provide the highest standard of psychological therapy to people in distress. I have always been dismayed by the over-medicalisation of distress and strive to provide alternatives to a solely medical management of mental health difficulties. As part of my search for therapeutic excellence, I trained in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and worked on a DBT team for 2 years. I also achieved accreditation as a Schema Therapist, a therapy I am passionate about because of its excellent outcomes and variety of therapy techniques. In addition, I developed a skill set in mindfulness-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), from running multiple ACT groups for people struggling from moderate to severe mental health problems. Another passion of mine has been contributing to training and supervision, and I have been a guest lecturer in TCD on a variety of topics, as well as a frequent supervisor to Assistant Psychologists, Trainee Clinical Psychologists and Staff Grade Psychologists. Difficulties I work with include: stress, burnout, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, childhood trauma, unresolved needs in childhood, emotional neglect, sexual abuse, physical abuse, personality difficulties, anger, eating issues, suicidality, hearing voices, psychosis etc. Specialties: schema therapy; Supervision; mindfulness skills; trauma interventions; psychosis; suicidality. I have specialized in schema therapy due to its prioritization of the therapeutic relationship, its focus on meeting unmet childhood needs and its broader variety of therapeutic techniques. The significant emerging evidence base for its effectiveness and seeing how effective it is in clinical practise is also really important. Our goal at Schema Therapy Ireland is to make very high quality psychological therapy, informed from a variety of approaches, available to private clients-thus developing a formulation of their difficulties, and matching the best therapy techniques to their specific needs.
